Makeup Makeover : Expert Secrets

Santa, I really REALLY want this book for Xmas!

This afternoon I popped into the Borders in the city and found this little gem amongst the shelves.

Makeup Makeovers: Expert Secrets for Stunning Transformations by Robert Jones

Admittedly, I have one too many makeup books and I think my house could definitely benefit from not having another….but for this particular one, I could definitely make an exception!

Firstly, the photography was absolutely flawless. And when I say flawless, I don’t mean in it the “touched up / photoshopped” kind of way. It was the lighting and the before/after photos really grabbed my attention. What woman doesn’t like/enjoy a before & after shot? One only has to watch Lifestyle YOU to see all the different types television programs that center around it :)

It was also incredibly detailed and catered to the different face shapes/ sizes/ textures/ colours etc, etc. Someday I’ll have to approach a professional make up artist to find out what face shape I am. I remember way back in the day when we were living in Abu-Dhabi, I asked my mum’s friend and she seemed to think it was a cross between a heart/rectangle? Haha not exactly sure how possible that is…seeing that I think the two are polar opposites! What I do know is that it’s incredibly useful if you do know what you are. Not only helps with knowing how to blend your makeup, but also helps you to select the correct hairstyle. Apparently, the right hair style can make you look like you’ve lost up to 3 pounds! Saaaaa-weet!

Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to read through the whole book, but from what I see, I learnt a couple of interesting things….

To achieve a perfectly contoured look, it’s ideal to have three different foundations. One that is your normal colour (yellow undertones are the most flattering), one that is a shade lighter (good for highlighting areas like forehead, nose, under eyes, and chin) and finally one foundation that is a shade darker (to contour the sides of your face). These three colours should not be that far off one another…only very subtle differences. And when applying these colours, stipple from the centre of your face out to the sides. The last sweep should be in a downward stoke so that the little baby hairs on your face don’t stick up.

You honestly can learn something new everyday! Nothing I love more than discovering makeup tips!
